Day One of Leg 1 of the Year Long Adventure is in the books. Our destination for the day was Wichita, Kansas. We chose Wichita because it was about a 6 hour drive from our house, and frankly that was all that we thought we might be able to handle on the first day.

As usual, getting out the door was the hardest part.  Packing the van took MUCH longer than expected, even with all our prep the night before.  Our stuff apparently multiplied during the night, and it would no longer fit in the planned configuration.  After a lot of frustration and some major rearranging, we pulled out of the driveway ONLY three hours behind schedule.  Victory!

Packed and ready to go

Time to go

The kids were great.  Even after 350+ miles, we could have probably driven a few more hours with no problem, but we were glad it wasn’t necessary.  We checked into the Best Western Governor’s Inn and headed downtown to look for a place to eat. Wichita has a downtown area that they have revitalized and put a lot of restaurants and bars into the square. It was hopping tonight.

We let the kids choose the restaurant, and they chose Spangles, an Elvis-themed diner.  They had a great time posing with Elvis.

Tomorrow brings more adventures in Kansas and then on to Omaha, Nebraska.
